Abstract :
The combination of catch-up saccades and smooth eye movements allows
primates to orient their visual axis towards moving targets. Saccades
are rapid eye movements that can reach velocities as high as 500°/s.
They allow to orient the fovea (the highest acuity zone of the retina)
to the target. They are controlled without any visual feedback, because
the visual delays are too long compared to their duration. Smooth pursuit
is characterized by slower movements. They can reach maximum velocities of
50°/s and allow to track a moving visual target. In contrast with saccades,
they are controlled by continuous visual feedback.
Visual tracking in two dimensions was used to investigate the role of motion
signals in smooth and saccadic responses.
