We introduce an approach based on minimal theoretical modeling, direct numerical simulations and evolutionary optimization for the characterization and design of arbitrary muscoloskeletal architectures. Applications range from slithering and swimming biolocomotion strategies to artificial muscles and bio-hybrid systems.
