[INMA] 2014-04-29 (14.00) : Feedback from the streets

At Euler building

Speaker : Robert Shorten (Hamilton Institute, Ireland)
Abstract : In this talk we will discuss feedback applications arising in smart city applications. Examples from pollution control, parking and car sharing will be discussed. If time permits the link between positivity and classical results on polynomials will be refuted.

[INMA] 2014-04-01 (14.00) : Spectral operator-theoretic approach to dissipative systems: toward a systematic linear analysis of nonlinear systems ?

At Euler building

Speaker : Mauroy, Alexandre
Abstract : Operator-theoretic methods provide a powerful alternative description of dynamical systems. In particular, the so-called Koopman operator turns a nonlinear system into a linear (but infinite-dimensional) system that is amenable to spectral analysis. While the spectral properties of the Koopman operator have been extensively studied over the past decades in the case of conservative systems (i.e., on an attractor), we show in this talk that they are also useful for studying the global properties of dissipative systems (i.e., off the attractor). This will be illustrated through the concept of isochrons (which is of great importance in computational neuroscience). In this context, the operator-theoretic framework provides not only a new method for computing the isochrons but also an elegant way to extend them to other types of attractors. Finally, we will briefly explain how the framework might also yield a new approach to global stability analysis which mirrors the spectral stability analysis of linear systems.

[INMA] 2014-03-18 (14.00) : Studying eye movements in children to better understand brain development

At Euler building

Speaker : Ego, Caroline
Abstract : Eye tracking helps uncovering very important brain functions. In particular, studying eye tracking in children helps understanding how eye movements control improves with age through brain maturation. In the present study, we were interested in the development of predictive abilities during childhood. We asked children to track moving objects that were temporarily blanked and recorded their eye movements using an infrared eye tracker. Visual tracking of temporarily invisible moving targets reveals that predictive smooth pursuit, saccade triggering and the interaction between both types of eye movements improves with age.

[INMA] 2014-03-04 (14.00) : Formal methods for analysis and co-design of Wireless Networked Control Systems

At Euler building

Speaker : Alessandro D'Innocenzo (University of L'Aquila)
Abstract : Wireless networked control systems (WNCS) are distributed control systems where the communication between sensors, actuators, and computational units is supported by a wireless communication network. In this talk we propose to model a wireless networked control system by discrete-time stochastic hybrid systems (dtSHS). We propose a methodology based on finite abstractions of a dtSHS for analysis and co-design of controller and communication parameters of a WNCS, where the control specifications are given using temporal logics. In particular, we illustrate and apply an abstraction algorithm to approximate the infinite dimensional dtSHS as a finite dimensional Markov Decision Process (MDP), and combine standard optimization methods over MDPs and stochastic model checking algorithms to perform power control in order to minimize the energy consumption while satisfying probabilistic safety constraints on the controlled physical system. We prove and use error bounds on the approximation error induced by the abstraction to validate the effectiveness of the control policy designed over the MDP, when applied to the original dtSHS model.
