[INMA] 2007-03-06 (14pm) : "Hypergraphs, Metabolic Networks and Bioreaction Systems"
At Auditoire Euler
Speaker :
Bastin, Georges
Abstract :
The intracellular metabolism is currently represented by a metabolic network.
A metabolic network is a directed hypergraph that encodes a set of elementary biochemical
reactions taking place within the cell. In this hypergraph, the nodes represent the involved metabolites
and the edges represent the metabolic fluxes. In this talk, the goal is to design a minimal dynamic bioreaction model for
a cellular process in the situation where (a) the model is based on the knowledge of a detailed underlying metabolic network, (b)
measurements of extra-cellular species in the reactor are the only available measurements. We follow a systematic "model reduction"
approach that automatically produces a family of equivalent models involving a minimal set of bioreactions while being fully compatible
with the underlying metabolism and consistent with the available experimental data. The main tool to achieve this task is the decomposition
of the flux distribution encoded by the hypergraph as a non-negative linear combination of basis vectors that represent the simplest
admissible metabolic pathways of the network and form a unique convex basis of the set of admissible flux distributions. As a matter of
illustration and motivation to the theory, we consider the example of chinese hamster ovary cells producing interferon.
[INMA] 2007-03-01 (15.00pm) : Colloquium CESAME/MAPA "Equation de Loewner, mouvements browniens et phénomènes critiques, d'après W. Werner."
At Auditoire Euler
Speaker :
Jean Bricmont (UCL)
Abstract :
L'exposé introduira un nouveau processus aléatoire, l'évolution de Loewner stochastique,
qui trouve de nombreuses applications dans l'étude des phénomènes critiques bidimensionnels
en physique statistique.
[INMA] 2007-02-27 (14pm) : "Google's pageRank and the choice of the outlinks"
At Local A.207
Speaker :
Ninove, Laure
Abstract :
In order to be visited by websurfers, a webpage should have a high ranking on a search engine like Google. Google classifies the webpages
according to the PageRank, a score based on the link popularity of the pages. To improve the PageRank of your webpages, you could ask
other webmasters to add hyperlinks from their pages to yours. But your outlinks, i.e. the hyperlinks from your pages to the rest of the Web,
also have an influence on your PageRank. In this talk, we will consider how to improve the PageRank of a
given webpage or website by choosing appropriate outlinks.

[INMA] 2007-02-20 (14pm) : Colloquium CESAME "An experimental and theoretical investigation of the relationship between objective and subjective time"
At Auditoire Euler
Speaker :
Missal, Marcus
Abstract :
Nobody knows what time really is. Events in the world do not occur simultaneously but are separated by something that we call time.
To this objective time line in the outside world corresponds an inner, subjective perception of elapsed time. The relationship between objective
and subjective times can be studied with psychophysical and neurophysiological methods. This conference will review the accumulated
knowledge about the representation of elapsed time, and present an original study of the relationship between outer and inner "times".
We will show that this theoretical question has important practical implications in neurology.
